The renowned in-cosmetics Formulation Summi t will return this October\, welcoming personal care and cosm etic formulators to discover the latest advances in the age of sustainabil ity and well-being. Running from 25-26 October 2022 at the Leonard o Royal Hotel in London\, this year’s theme will put sustainabili ty at the forefront\, exploring the advances in science and technology tha t underpin emerging trends in cosmetic formulation. \nWith a packed line-up of international experts\, the Summit will offer attendees the chance to gain high-level scientific i nsights and solutions into the most pertinent trends impacting the future of the industry. A total of 22 sessions will run over two days\, with all- new breakout roundtable sessions enabling delegates to be immersed in sele cted topics and contribute to the wider discussion about specific trends a nd challenges.
\nThis year’s programme will offer R&D professionals and formulators from cosmetic manufacturers and ingredient suppliers insig hts into a wide range of topics\, ranging from nutricosmetics\, the microb iome\, microplastics\, recyclability and the latest regulations.
\n< strong>Sustainability and the Environment
\nOpening the 202 2 Summit\, Barbara Olioso\, Managing Director\, The Green Chemist Consultancy will deliver the opening remarks exploring sustainabi lity with reference to industry metrics\, packaging and microplastics. The day will continue with a packed schedule of insightful sessions from ‘Tre nds in sustainable beauty\, products and packaging’\; to ‘Designing and in tegrating an environmental scorecard system’\; while ‘Sustainable packagin g trends’ will offer insights directly from a brand’s perspective.
\nSpeaking about the Summit\, Barbara commented: “Today our industry is cha nging at a fast pace\, so it is essential more than ever before to keep up to date with the latest trends and scientific findings. The Formulation S ummit\, an interactive and intimate face-to-face event for professionals w orking in cosmetic product development\, is the best way to do exactly tha t.”
\nConfirmed speakers appearing on day one\, include Dr. Giovanna Laudisio\, CEO and Co-Founder of Naturbeads\, who will e xplore ‘Cellulose Microbeads: a sustainable alternative to microplastics i n cosmetics.’ The session will explore the use of microplastics and their impact on both the environment and human health. She’ll explore the curren t regulations\, with bans currently in place in the US\, UK\, Canada\, Chi na and more. Naturbeads\, a young start-up hailing from the University of Bath\, is taking the steps to commercialise biodegradable\, plant-based mi crobeads as a sustainable alternative. It will provide delegates with the opportunity to understand how the technology is transforming cellulose fro m its natural fibre form into perfectly spherical cellulose beads without the addition of plasticisers.
\nMeanwhile\, Margaret Bates\, Executive Director\, OPRL will offer a deep dive into recycling labels and the impact of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). She will explain how the OPRL labelling system works\, how recyclability is determi ned\, how consumer trust and confidence have been achieved and how brands can ensure that their packaging qualifies for a “Recycle” label.
\nE nvironmental claims and the opportunities and challenges associated with t hem will also be put under the spotlight when Olivia Santoni\, CEO and Amanda Isom\, Regulatory Affairs Director\, Bloom Regulatory Limited< /strong> take to the stage. Their session will focus on the latest regulat ory landscape and the practical challenges and opportunities for companies operating in the UK and Europe. It will also explore the impact and consi derations required when substantiating claims such as microplastics\, clea n beauty\, waterless\, environmentally friendly\, biodegradable/compostabl e\, and more.
\nThe science behind the latest trends
\nDay two will return to explore the science behind the latest cos metic trends\, from understanding the ‘omics’ era and the importance of th e matrisome\; to how to harness the latest developments in the understandi ng of the microbiome for cosmetic formulation\; and the oral supplements p roviding beauty benefits.
\nSpeakers confirmed to join the Summit pr ogramme on day two include Francis McGlone\, Head of the Somatosen sory & Affective Neuroscience Group\, School of Natural Sciences & Psychol ogy who will explore how neurocosmetics links sensation with emot ional well-being. The session will explore the role of touch in well-being \, the latest neuroscience and neuropsychology techniques and how to formu late to maximise the benefits of touch.
\nClosing the 2022 Formulati on Summit\, David Wood\, Author\, Chair\, London Futurists will deliver a thought-provoking keynote session. The author of ‘The Abo lition of Aging’ will raise the question ‘Are we nearing the longevity esc ape velocity?’. The concept of longevity escape velocity\, or the point at which science can extend your life for more than a year for every year th at you are alive\, has been gaining traction. He will help delegates under stand the perception of ageing and the radical extension of human longevit y\; the accelerating field of rejuvenation biology\; and the possibility o f indefinite lifespans.
