Last week, Retail Beauty reported that French beauty giant L’Oréal was nearing a deal to acquire British premium skincare brand Medik8 for approximately €1 billion (AU$1.6 billion).
The rumours have now been confirmed, with L’Oréal Groupe announcing it has signed an agreement to acquire a majority stake in the brand.
As part of the transaction, private equity firm Inflexion will retain a minority stake, while Medik8 founder Elliot Isaacs remains on the board. The current management team will also stay in place to ensure continuity.
Founded by Isaacs, a scientist, Medik8 is best known for its Crystal Retinal serum and CSA Philosophy©—Vitamin C and sunscreen by day, Vitamin A by night. Initially created for professional use, the brand has evolved into an omni-channel success across Europe, with a growing presence in the US.
The move strengthens L’Oréal’s Luxe division with the addition of a science-led, results-driven brand poised for global expansion. “We are delighted to welcome Medik8 to the L’Oréal family,” said Cyril Chapuy, President of L’Oréal LUXE. “As a premium skincare range, with high levels of proven efficacy at an accessible price point, Medik8 perfectly complements our existing skincare portfolio. L’Oréal will begin consolidating Medik8’s sales from the date of transaction closing. The deal includes an option for L’Oréal to acquire the remaining shares. Completion is expected in the coming months, subject to regulatory approval.
