The launch of Estée Lauder’s The Legacy Collection took place recently, with special guest Michael Edwards, the renowned fragrance taxonomist and founding editor of Fragrances of the World, in attendance.

The event celebrated the reimagining of five iconic Estée Lauder fragrances, expertly curated and crafted by world-renowned perfume editor Frédéric Malle.

At the event, Edwards discussed his latest release, American Legends: The Evolution of American Fragrances. The book is a long-awaited companion to his earlier work, Perfume Legends, which shed light on the evolution of French perfumery.

American Legends captures the rich history and originality of American fragrances from Elizabeth Arden’s Blue Grass (1934) to Estée Lauder’s Youth Dew (1953) to Calvin Klein’s Obsession (1985) to Le Labo’s Santal 33 (2011) were significant in reshaping consumer habits and trends.

Edwards offers insights into 40 legendary American perfumes through the voices of their creators. With over 50,000 fragrances classified throughout his career, Edwards has become a key figure in the fragrance industry, providing a common language for understanding perfume.

The Legacy Collection is a tribute to the visionary Mrs Estée Lauder, who revolutionised the fragrance industry in the 1950s by encouraging women to buy perfume for themselves rather than waiting to receive it as a gift.

Edwards highlighted that many American perfumes such as Elizabeth Taylor’s White Shoulders (1943), Estée Lauder’s Youth Dew (1953), and Calvin Klein’s Obsession (1985) were significant in reshaping consumer habits and trends.

The collection blends Lauder’s timeless essence with Malle’s modern interpretation.

The fragrances in The Legacy Collection include:

  1. AZURÉE LEGACY: A sensual blend of Mediterranean aromas with warm spices, herbs, and patchouli.
  2. PRIVATE COLLECTION LEGACY: A verdant bouquet with green notes of basil, galbanum, and sandalwood.
  3. WHITE LINEN LEGACY: A floral aldehydic scent with jasmine, rose, and vetiver.
  4. KNOWING LEGACY: A rich fruity chypre with notes of raspberry, rose, and amber.
  5. ESTÉE LEGACY: A floral musky composition featuring ylang ylang, carnation, and honey notes.

The campaign for The Legacy Collection features Estée Lauder Global Brand Ambassador Carolyn Murphy, who embodies the different moods of each fragrance.

The Legacy Collection is now available at select Myer stores and online at Estée Lauder’s websites in Australia and New Zealand.
