Sustainability and green initiatives are the hottest topics in beauty and personal care. Only last week, for example, Nivea added its first up-cycled ingredient to a new cream in its Naturally Good range and the message from Luxe Pack Monaco, the world’s premier trade show for creative packaging, was go refillable or go home.
Greener, recognised as Australia’s #1 clean tech startup, has partnered with leading beauty industry companies such as Adorn Cosmetics, Endota Spa and Flora & Fauna, Australia’s largest cruelty-free and vegan online store. Other brands the company has worked with include Microsoft, T2 Tea and Brew Dog, taking its partnerships to 250-plus.
Founded by Tom Ferrier and Neil McVeigh in 2019, Greener has announced further seed funding of $4 million, led by NAB Ventures with participation from RealVC, the Sydney-based venture capital firm. Last year, the carbon offset consumer app also received initial seed funding of $1 million from investors.
Greener’s business and consumer tech solutions and app target both sides of the retail coin to help Australians to shop more environmentally and offset their carbon with every purchase at no extra cost. Like leading beauty brands such as Weleda, The Body Shop and Aesop, Greener has B Corp Certification, which is attained by businesses with the highest standards of social, environmental and legal accountability.
As Retail Beauty recently reported, 69 per cent of Australian consumers in a survey conducted by the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), believe that the purpose of a retail company in general is to respond better to social and environmental issues.
Greener hopes to partner with more than 500 brands and businesses by next year and has also partnered with the City of Sydney and the ARA to assist with their net zero policies.
The company has already achieved exceptional results to date. According to findings, Greener businesses experience upwards of 10 per cent customer growth with shoppers opting to switch to Greener businesses from non-green competition. In addition, it has helped shoppers reduce the emissions of their purchases by 23 per cent.
Greener has also worked with leading scientists from Harvard and the University of Sydney to produce the most comprehensive carbon data base for the Australian economy.
“By rewarding greener businesses with new customers, and helping consumers take action at no cost, we can drive unprecedented impact,” says Ferrier. “If everyone got behind the Green economy just here in Australia, we could help take the equivalent of 58 million cars off the road each year”.
NAB Ventures, the venture capital fund backed by National Australia Bank, one of the nation’s Big Four banks and among the top 20 banks globally, is equally enthusiastic.
“We all have a part to play in climate action and NAB certainly recognises our role,” notes Todd Forest, managing director of NAB Ventures. “We’re continuously looking at ways we can support our customers and colleagues to take action to reduce our carbon footprint and we think Greener’s product has great potential. Greener is an excellent fit for NAB Ventures and we look forward to working with them and exploring further opportunities together”.
