The global collagen market size was valued at USD 8.36 billion in 2020 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.0% from 2020 to 2028, according to Grand View Research.
The market research and consulting company cites an upsurge in demand from the cosmetics industry, as well as increasing end-use applications such as growing usage in the food and beverage industry, as key factors in driving market growth.
Olay, one of Procter & Gamble’s most successful brands, recently launched a Collagen Peptide 24 collection.
Olay Skin Care Scientist David Khoo explained over a webinar that not all collagen was created equal and said that the new range was formulated with ‘Bioavailable’ technology, without the nasties – no fragrance, parabens, phthalates, mineral oil or synthetic dyes.
This collagen peptide formula goes deep into the skin and is easily absorbed when compared to regular collagen, he said.
“A core ingredient of Collagen Peptide 24 is the palmitoyl pentapeptide. The pentapeptide is a short chain of amino acids based on the amino acid sequence of skin collagen. It’s small molecular mass and oil-loving palmitoyl tail enables it to be readily absorbed into the skin, thus more bioavailable.
“This peptide ingredient is complemented by niacinamide and glycerol, both vital ingredients for all-day morning skin. Niacinamide stimulates skin renewal and strengthens the skin barrier, helping the skin retain moisture and plumpness and better resist the daily stresses that would rob our skin of its glow. Glycerol provides skin with essential moisture.”
David skin was “surprisingly dynamic” and “can age as much as eight years in a single day.”
“It sounds like a farfetched observation, but we know this from conducting studies in which women take controlled selfies of their skin. We found that while skin starts our radiant, smooth and supple in the morning, dark circles, enlarged pores and skin texture as well as skin elasticity can significantly worsen over the course of a day.
“We asked ourselves how we might help skin retain its morning glow all day. Collagen is a foundational element of that. Skin that has healthy collagen in abundance is more radiant, smooth and firm. But it’s been shown that collagen levels decline by 1 per cent every year, starting in our 20’s.”
David said the Olay Collagen Peptide24 range was created to help enhance and maintain skin’s bounce and plumpness throughout the day.
Olay’s Regenerist Collagen Peptide 24 Collection is available at Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, Coles and Woolworths.
