As the market for ingestible beauty products with bio-fermented ingredients continues to grow, there is now a noticeable increase in skincare launches containing fermented ingredients.
According to Mintel, 28 per cent of all skin care products launched between December 2018 and November 2019 contained fermented ingredients.
Meanwhile, WGSN listed fermented beauty as one of its Top Trends for 2022 & Beyond.
According to WGSN: “The desire for potent ingredients that last longer is driving interest in this beauty shift. Described as ‘kombucha for the skin’ and with roots in K- and J-Beauty, fermentation increases the three product Ps – potency, penetration and preservation.”
Consumers are getting more savvy about such ingredients and how they support the skin’s microbiome system topically.
This trend is visible in Australia as consumers embrace brands like Cultured – a skincare brand based in the UK powered by fermented oils and black tea extract (kombucha).
Cultured’s Biome One Serum was included as a Finalist in the recent Mecca Beauty Election. This serum contains Culture’s signature complex of pre + post biotics and bio-ferments.
Cultured is just one of the recent launches of skincare with a focus on fermented ingredients.
Other brands of note include Neogen Lab (created and headquartered in South Korea). Neogen has a popular Neogen Dermalogy Real Ferment range which is powered by bifida ferment lysate and saccharomyces ferment filtrate. The line includes a face mist, a serum, an essence and a toner.
Florena (owned by Beiersdorf AG) is another brand that focuses on skincare with fermented ingredients. The range includes fermented face oils, moisturisers, face masks and cleansers. Florena claims that through their fermentation process their ingredients yield much better results. As an example, Florena states that its fermentation process results in “olive oil (that) contains 50 times more essential fatty acids, like Omega 6 and Omega 9 than unfermented olive oil for skin”.
Other brands with products with fermented ingredients include Drunk Elephant, Then I Met You and Australian brands like La Mav and The Jojoba Company.
