In the wake of the horrific incident at Bondi Junction Westfield that left six dead and several injured, the Australian retail community has expressed deep shock and sorrow.
The attack, which occurred over the weekend, also saw the assailant fatally shot by NSW police at the scene.
Paul Zahra, CEO of the Australian Retailers Association (ARA), voiced the sentiments of the community. “We are all profoundly affected by the tragic events at Bondi Junction. Our deepest condolences go out to everyone impacted during this incredibly difficult time,” he said. He praised the “incredible courage and rapid response” of the retail workers and first responders who acted decisively to protect people during the attack.
The ARA is currently coordinating with the NSW Government to ensure that support services are available for retail staff and customers affected by the tragedy.
Echoing a similar response, the National Retail Association (NRA) acknowledged the devastation felt by its members and the wider retail community. “We commend the bravery of shop owners, retail workers, and shoppers who took heroic actions to protect and aid others during the incident,” the NRA stated, also extending gratitude to the police officer who neutralised the threat.
The statement highlighted a concerning increase in crime and violence in retail areas, calling for urgent measures to safeguard these spaces.
Scentre Group CEO Elliott Rusanow, which owns and operates a portfolio of 42 Westfield destinations, also extended his deepest and heartfelt condolences to the families impacted by the tragedy.
Major fashion retailers have also issued statements, sharing their condolences and confirming temporary closures of their stores at Westfield Bondi Junction to focus on supporting their staff.
Westfield Bondi Junction remains closed with many laying tributes of flowers out the front of the shopping centre.
