Shopify merchants celebrated a record-breaking Black Friday-Cyber Monday (BFCM) weekend in 2024, generating a total of USD $11.5 billion in sales globally, marking a 24% increase from the $9.3 billion achieved in 2023. Over 76 million consumers made purchases, underscoring the strength of this year’s holiday shopping season despite global economic challenges.
In Australia, the number of consumers shopping with Shopify merchants grew by 14% compared to last year, with peak sales occurring at 9 PM AEST on Cyber Monday, December 2. Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane were the top-performing cities, and the average cart price surged 23% to $199.12, up from $162 last year. Popular product categories included clothing tops, cosmetics, dresses, fitness and nutrition items, and activewear, with standout items such as boxer briefs, lotions, and eye makeup leading sales.
Point-of-sale (POS) transactions by Australian Shopify merchants saw a 29% year-over-year increase, reflecting a continued resurgence in in-store shopping. Globally, POS transactions also climbed, contributing to a unified shopping experience across online and offline channels. Mobile devices dominated the global shopping trend, with 74% of purchases made via mobile compared to 26% on desktops.
On the global stage, Shopify reported key milestones: peak sales of $4.6 million per minute on Black Friday and 58% year-over-year growth in GMV processed via Shop Pay. Top-selling countries included the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Germany, with Los Angeles, New York, London, San Francisco, and Miami leading city sales.
Trending products across Shopify merchants included Vuori’s Performance Jogger, Tower 28 Beauty’s Swipe Serum Concealer, and Airup’s 3 Pods Chilled Cheers. Notably, more than 67,000 merchants recorded their highest sales day ever during the BFCM weekend, and over 16,500 merchants made their first sale.
Shaun Broughton, Managing Director JAPAC at Shopify, praised the resilience of retailers and consumers. “Against the odds, this BFCM weekend proved to be a major success for retailers,” he said. “In Australia, we saw a 14% rise in consumers purchasing and a 29% growth in POS transactions, reflecting the rise of in-store shopping alongside strategic online spending. Retailers who embraced an omnichannel approach succeeded in capturing evolving consumer behaviour and driving significant revenue.”
Globally, Shopify merchants in the Asia-Pacific region recorded a 29% increase in sales, showcasing the region’s rapid growth and consumer engagement.
