Givaudan, the world’s largest fragrance and flavours company, has a very strong presence in the skincare game through its Active Beauty division. The Swiss multinational’s wide-ranging portfolio of award-winning active ingredients are used by beauty companies worldwide and includes BlurHD, Brightenyl, Ceramide II and Hyalusphere.
In the first two weeks of February alone, Givaudan launched Gravityl, a 100 per cent natural active incorporating marine biotechnology designed to streamline the jawline, and RetiLife, the first natural origin retinol on the market.
The Swiss-based giant had revenues of 7,117 billion Swiss Francs (AUD$11.27 billion) in 2022 and the company is committed to staying ahead of its major rivals – Symrise, DSM-Firmenich and IFF.
To up its skincare cred, Givaudan has acquired three flagship ingredients from Amyris, the fast-growing biotech player – squalane, hemisqualane and CleanScreen, a sun protection active. The California-based company is the parent of a clutch of high profile brands, including Biossance, JVN, the haircare brand of Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness, Rose Inc, founded by supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Costa Brazil. Last October, Amyris teamed with Aussie actress, Naomi Watts, to launch Stripes, which offers science-backed, menopause wellness personal care products.
The Amyris ingredient that has captured global attention is its sugar-derived squalane, a sustainable alternative to the version found in sharks’ livers. A major driver of the success of its Biossance brand, Amyris launched the first International Squalane Day on October 14th last year.
Under the new partnership, Amyris will continue to manufacture ingredients for Givaudan and provide intel on innovation developments. While Givaudan will also commercialise future sustainable ingredients.
According to Markus Rassmann, head of Active Beauty at Givaudan, today we have the widest offering of biotech cosmetic ingredients on the market. “We are proud to expand our Active Beauty portfolio with these key active cosmetic ingredients. They represent unique added value in answering our customers’ expectations for innovative, sustainable and efficient beauty solutions”.
Today, we are reaching a major new step in our commercial partnership, added John Melo, president and CEO of Amyris. “Our technology and biomanufacturing capabilities deliver truly differentiated sustainable ingredients that are what our customers are demanding. This transaction is a major step forward in funding our growth and enabling us to reach operating profitability”.
In Australia, Amyris brands Biossance and JVN are stocked by Sephora and Rose Inc and Costa Brazil are available from Mecca.
