Specialist beauty chains such as Sephora, Ulta in the US and Mecca in Australia shuttered their stores in mid-to-late March as global lockdowns came into force.

All of them have continued to operate online to cater for their loyal customer bases.

Late last week, Mecca announced the re-opening of selected stores, notably high-performing doors in CBDs and core suburbs.

There will be a no-touch policy and the number of customers allowed in stores will be limited at any one time.

Other safety measures will see the company check the temperatures of store hosts and customers prior to entry and hand-sanitising stations.

Card-only transactions are the preferred payment choice.

Sephora re-opened all of its Australian stores last week with shortened hours.

Similar to Mecca, social distancing, a no touch policy, hand sanitising and much more have been put in place to keep customers safe.

 Makeover services, Benefit Brow Bars and product testers have been suspended.

Ulta, the largest specialist beauty chain in the US, closed its stores across the US on March 19.

 The retailer will re-open 180 stores across seven states – Arkansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennesee, Texas and Utah.

Stores will also offer a curbside pick-up option. 

Ulta has also adopted new safety protocols such as the compulsory wearing of face masks by all staff and social distancing markers on floors.

 There will be no product testers until further notice.
