in-cosmetics Formulation Summit @ Leonardo Royal London Tower Bridge
Nov 29 – Nov 30 all-day
in-cosmetics Formulation Summit @ Leonardo Royal London Tower Bridge

The renowned in-cosmetics Formulation Summit will return to the Leonardo Royal Hotel, London from 29 – 30 November 2021, exploring the topic of advancing in the age of sustainability and well-being. With the summit taking place in a virtual format last year due to the pandemic, this year’s conference marks the in-cosmetics Group’s first physical event in Europe in over two years.

Through the lens of leading international experts, the Summit will offer unparalleled, up-to-date intelligence into the most pertinent sustainability and wellbeing trends that are influencing the beauty industry today and in the future. A total of 23 sessions will take place over the two-day event, with dedicated breaks for networking with exhibitors, peers, and globally renowned speakers and experts.

R&D professionals and formulators from cosmetic manufacturers and ingredient suppliers will benefit from the Summit’s high-level, scientific programme that is centred around four main themes: neuroscientists, sustainability, cosmetic claims, and the pandemic and consumer behaviour. The in-cosmetics Formulation Summit will delve into the various aspects of “good” science, that can enable formulators to create products that are fantastic for both consumers well-being and the planet, discussing everything from raw material shortages to safety regulations around hygiene products.

The pandemic and consumer behaviour

From soap to sanitisers, demand for germ-busting ‘hero’ products has rocketed due to the pandemic, leaving startling gaps in the supply chain. Mary Lord, Former President of the Society Of Cosmetic Scientists UK & Ireland, will open the Summit programme with a talk discussing what has happened during the pandemic and how it will shape the cosmetic industry for years to come. Other sessions focusing on the effect of the pandemic include Samantha Dover, Global Beauty & Personal Care Analyst at Mintel who will discuss COVID-19’s impact on consumers and how priority shifts will be habit-forming, and Paolo Camattari, Research, Development and Innovation Manager at Lynoslife will delve into pandemic-related chaos in the supply chain.

A focus on sustainability

As an overarching theme of the Summit, several sessions will touch upon how brands and formulators can implement better sustainability practices. In one session, Chris DeArmitt, World-Class Plastic Materials Consultant, Environmental Expert, President of Phantom Plastics will debunk the common myths surrounding plastic pollution and recycling and highlight other viable routes to sustainable plastics. Elsewhere, Francesca Morgante, Market Development Manager Europe at RSPO, will explore the future of palm oil production and how RSPO certification can offer a viable solution to tackle the most pressing environmental and social issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss and protection of human rights.

The role of neuroscientists

Alongside sustainability, the Summit programme will also delve into how mental well-being can affect physical appearance and why developing products that deliver true holistic efficacy could be the way forward for the beauty industry.

Highlights include Karl Lintner, Owner and CEO of Kal’idees S.A.S explaining neurocosmetic approaches to anti-ageing products, and Professor Charles Spence, Sensory Marketing Consultant, Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford highlighting the multi-sensory communication of pheromones and neurotransmitters. Elsewhere, Dr. Katerina Steventon, Snr. Innovation Consultant, National Biofilms Innovation Centre & Independent Skincare Consultant will discuss how skin health and beauty affect our well-being and self-esteem, and vice versa, drawing on research and empirical insights from her integrative clinical practice.

Being conscious of cosmetic claims

As the line between cosmetics, biocides and sanitising agents becomes thinner, confusion around safety and regulations widens. The fourth and final theme of the Summit will see expert speakers dig a little deeper into cosmetic claims. On the topic of cosmetics, biocides, and disinfectants, Dr. Cuross Bakhtiar, Chief Executive at Harley St. Cosmetics will discuss the fine line between products we have gotten to know very well over the last few months. Also touching upon the regulatory mayhem due to the pandemic, classification of products and claims, Mojgan Moddaresi, Cosmetics Safety assessor at Personal Care Regulatory Ltd will talk through the damaging effects of misleading cosmetic messaging and how brands can win back integrity.

Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director of in-cosmetics Formulation Summit, said: “Whilst the virtual summit was a great success last year, we know there is nothing quite like face-to-face events so we are absolutely delighted to announce that the in-cosmetics Formulation Summit will return to London in its normal format. As ever, the conference programme gets under the skin of the most pressing industry trends, providing R&D professionals and formulators high-level content and the opportunity to network with experts and peers. We can’t wait to kick start the discussion this November.”

Booking is now open with early-bird rates available until 22 October.

Delegates gain access to the conference programme, including seminars and panel discussions, meeting invites to sponsors, delegates and speakers.

in-cosmetics Formulation Summit 2022 @ Leonardo Royal Hotel in London

The renowned in-cosmetics Formulation Summit will return this October, welcoming personal care and cosmetic formulators to discover the latest advances in the age of sustainability and well-being. Running from 25-26 October 2022 at the Leonardo Royal Hotel in London, this year’s theme will put sustainability at the forefront, exploring the advances in science and technology that underpin emerging trends in cosmetic formulation. Registration is now open.

With a packed line-up of international experts, the Summit will offer attendees the chance to gain high-level scientific insights and solutions into the most pertinent trends impacting the future of the industry. A total of 22 sessions will run over two days, with all-new breakout roundtable sessions enabling delegates to be immersed in selected topics and contribute to the wider discussion about specific trends and challenges.

This year’s programme will offer R&D professionals and formulators from cosmetic manufacturers and ingredient suppliers insights into a wide range of topics, ranging from nutricosmetics, the microbiome, microplastics, recyclability and the latest regulations.

Sustainability and the Environment

Opening the 2022 Summit, Barbara Olioso, Managing Director, The Green Chemist Consultancy will deliver the opening remarks exploring sustainability with reference to industry metrics, packaging and microplastics. The day will continue with a packed schedule of insightful sessions from ‘Trends in sustainable beauty, products and packaging’; to ‘Designing and integrating an environmental scorecard system’; while ‘Sustainable packaging trends’ will offer insights directly from a brand’s perspective.

Speaking about the Summit, Barbara commented: “Today our industry is changing at a fast pace, so it is essential more than ever before to keep up to date with the latest trends and scientific findings. The Formulation Summit, an interactive and intimate face-to-face event for professionals working in cosmetic product development, is the best way to do exactly that.”

Confirmed speakers appearing on day one, include Dr. Giovanna Laudisio, CEO and Co-Founder of Naturbeads, who will explore ‘Cellulose Microbeads: a sustainable alternative to microplastics in cosmetics.’ The session will explore the use of microplastics and their impact on both the environment and human health. She’ll explore the current regulations, with bans currently in place in the US, UK, Canada, China and more. Naturbeads, a young start-up hailing from the University of Bath, is taking the steps to commercialise biodegradable, plant-based microbeads as a sustainable alternative. It will provide delegates with the opportunity to understand how the technology is transforming cellulose from its natural fibre form into perfectly spherical cellulose beads without the addition of plasticisers.

Meanwhile, Margaret Bates, Executive Director, OPRL will offer a deep dive into recycling labels and the impact of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). She will explain how the OPRL labelling system works, how recyclability is determined, how consumer trust and confidence have been achieved and how brands can ensure that their packaging qualifies for a “Recycle” label.

Environmental claims and the opportunities and challenges associated with them will also be put under the spotlight when Olivia Santoni, CEO and Amanda Isom, Regulatory Affairs Director, Bloom Regulatory Limited take to the stage. Their session will focus on the latest regulatory landscape and the practical challenges and opportunities for companies operating in the UK and Europe. It will also explore the impact and considerations required when substantiating claims such as microplastics, clean beauty, waterless, environmentally friendly, biodegradable/compostable, and more.

The science behind the latest trends

Day two will return to explore the science behind the latest cosmetic trends, from understanding the ‘omics’ era and the importance of the matrisome; to how to harness the latest developments in the understanding of the microbiome for cosmetic formulation; and the oral supplements providing beauty benefits.

Speakers confirmed to join the Summit programme on day two include Francis McGlone, Head of the Somatosensory & Affective Neuroscience Group, School of Natural Sciences & Psychology who will explore how neurocosmetics links sensation with emotional well-being. The session will explore the role of touch in well-being, the latest neuroscience and neuropsychology techniques and how to formulate to maximise the benefits of touch.

Closing the 2022 Formulation Summit, David Wood, Author, Chair, London Futurists will deliver a thought-provoking keynote session. The author of ‘The Abolition of Aging’ will raise the question ‘Are we nearing the longevity escape velocity?’. The concept of longevity escape velocity, or the point at which science can extend your life for more than a year for every year that you are alive, has been gaining traction. He will help delegates understand the perception of ageing and the radical extension of human longevity; the accelerating field of rejuvenation biology; and the possibility of indefinite lifespans.

Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director of in-cosmetics Formulation Summit, said: “This year’s Formulation Summit will take a deep dive into sustainability and the next steps for brands, formulators and R&D professionals looking to embrace circularity. From evolving trends, innovation in packaging to upcycling and more, delegates can join sessions led by international industry leaders and for the first time, join in the discussion in an all-new roundtable format. We’re delighted to welcome a roster of industry experts, along with our keynote speaker David Wood who is set to challenge and inspire our understanding of ageing and the human condition.”
