La Roche-Posay has announced a new partnership with Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), a global leader in melanoma research, to tackle Australia’s rising skin cancer crisis. This five-year collaboration will support critical research and promote sun safety education across the country.
With one Australian losing their life to melanoma every six hours, the partnership aims to increase awareness of the importance of sun protection and fund lifesaving melanoma research.
“Australia’s alarming skin cancer rates demand a united front. We are so proud to stand with Melanoma Institute Australia to raise awareness on sun safety and pioneering critical research in the treatment of skin cancer,” Alex Davison, Chief Executive Officer, L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand said. “We believe this partnership represents a significant step forward and with La Roche-Posay’s commitment to offering life-changing dermatological skincare for all, we are committed to being part of the solution.”
Melanoma Institute Australia CEO Matthew Browne highlighted the urgency of the collaboration, noting that melanoma is the most common cancer among Australians aged 20-39.
“Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world, with one Australian diagnosed every 30 minutes. A little-known fact is that melanoma is also the most common cancer impacting 20 to 39 year-old Australians,” he said. “The State of the Nation in Melanoma report identified prevention as being a critical part of the roadmap towards reaching our goal of zero deaths from melanoma. It highlighted the need for all Australians to follow the 5 sun safe rules to protect themselves from over exposure to UV radiation. As one of the 5 sun safe rules, the use of sunscreen is a vital preventative measure and that’s why Melanoma Institute Australia is delighted to announce our exclusive sunscreen partnership with La Roche-Posay.”
As part of the partnership, La Roche-Posay will feature MIA’s logo on its Anthelios SPF50+ sunscreen range from late 2024 and provide sun protection at MIA events. The collaboration also aims to bridge the gap in sunscreen usage, with studies showing that only 30% of Australians use sunscreen daily despite high UV exposure.
Samantha Russell, Medical Business Director at L’Oréal Australia & New Zealand, expressed excitement for the partnership, stating, “This is a natural yet very crucial partnership for La Roche-Posay with science and sun safety at its heart. Together with the Melanoma Institute, we have big plans over the next five years, spanning clinical research, advancement of awareness and education programs, and provision of La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios SPF50+ sunscreen range at Melanoma Institute events nationally.”
La Roche-Posay’s sunscreen range is available online and in-store at major retailers, including Chemist Warehouse and Priceline.
