Advent calendars were adapted some time in the 19th century by German Lutherans as a way to mark the days of the season leading up to Christmas, according to vox.com.

Most Advent calendars start on December 1, but the actual first day of the Advent season changes every year, as it technically begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and is celebrated on each successive Sunday leading up to Christmas. So, Advent 2022 began on Sunday, November 27.

The final day is the same every year: December 24, Christmas Eve — though many calendars run through Christmas Day.  The word Advent comes from the Latin word for “arrival”, which is adventus.

In recent years it has become a marketing opportunity for retailers, and beauty advent calendars have surged in popularity.

Here are some of the most impressive ones we have come across… so far.
